Position Overview 

Cayan is working on a major strategic initiative, setting a new standard of excellence in the provision and support of customers, products, and services within the Payments Industry.  

We are seeking a Java Engineer to join a new team responsible for delivery of components within an Enterprise scale data platform which underpins this and other strategic initiatives. 

As a Software Engineer within this team you will use your existing experience with Java within a modern Data Lake platform leveraging frameworks and technologies such as Docker, Kafka, Data Streaming, Spark and Map-R. 

This is an opportunity to be part of the team responsible for the collection, transformation and exposure of data from disparate systems at high velocity, enabling near-real time access to critical data sets and real business insights as the part of the platform underpinning our future BigData and AI aspirations. 

Position Description 

  • Design and develop efficient, scalable and high throughput solutions for data processing; ingestion, transformation and exposure. 
  • Complete technical tasks related to feature development and bug fixes 
  • Use modern data frameworks and technologies to ingest, transform and expose data to business systems spanning the Cayan/TSYS enterprise 
  • Facilitate data exposure through APIs using RESTful principles, JSON and XML 
  • Demonstrate functional comprehension of software design principles, including coupling/cohesion, decomposition/modularity, encapsulation/information hiding, and separation of interface and implementation 
  • Efficiently generate ideas and high-quality technical solutions, including detailed analysis of idea impact assessment and ultimate selection of the most appropriate solution 
  •  Contribute to the development of useful, technically accurate deliverables generated in a timely manner. 
  • Troubleshoot and fix defects 
  • Assist with software deployment activities to our production data centre 
  • Make process and procedural suggestions and remove obstacles 
  • Simplify and improve existing technical methodologies 
  • Adhere to and apply overarching internal practices and policies with respect to coding standards, unit testing, and status reports.   

Position Requirements


  • Eligibility to work in the UK on a full time and permanent basis 
  • BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related field
  • Working experience in Java
  • Experience with Design Patterns, Refactoring, OO Design and related areas
  • Passion for and self-motivated interest in Software Development as a profession, not just a job
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Must be proactive, self-motivated, attentive to detail, and able to work well under pressure
  • Strong communication skills
  • Willingness to work as part of a team


  • Experience of at least one of JSON, JavaScript and/or XML/XSLT 
  • Experience of Python 
  • Understanding of database design and programming 
  • Understanding of Message Oriented Middleware
