Quarterly Product Update – Spring 2018

1. Genius Countertop

Customer Satisfaction Surveys powered by TruRating

A brand new customer engagement feature has been added to Genius Countertop – customer satisfaction surveys powered by third party provider TruRating.

Many retailers struggle with measuring customer satisfaction. They may use email or survey URLs on printed receipts, hoping that the consumer will take the time to respond. However, TruRating has found that customer satisfaction surveys right at checkout are far more effective because they are tied to the immediate transaction – the feedback is in context with the consumer’s immediate experience.

This new feature will be available for all existing Genius Countertop customers who upgrade to version, as well as all new Genius customers. During checkout, the TruRating-branded screen will appear and prompt the consumer to answer one survey question as determined by the retailer.

For POS partners, you do not need to do anything to enable this feature, however feel free to contact your Partner Development Manager with any questions.
Agreement Screen Enhancements
Genius Countertop has enhanced optional agreement screens, so healthcare partners and merchants can adhere to HIPPA and state regulations during checkout.

The screens are designed to simplify how healthcare and pharmacy merchants support and meet state regulations during the checkout process. Some states require multiple disclosures to be accepted or declined as a group, while others require it explicitly for each disclosure. These screens support both use cases.

First, the POS triggers a single screen with multiple disclosures so consumers can reply yes/no to each. Then there is a button selection screen that identifies the relationship of the person collecting a prescription.

While designed for healthcare customers, it customizable for other types of merchants as well, such as those accepting membership terms, service contracts, and refund policies. The feature also gives partners the ability to build a simple consumer data collection and analytics repository for any interested merchants.

Partner coding is required, and API documentation is available. Please contact your Cayan Partner Development Manager for more information.

2.  Genius Checkout

Genius Checkout is the e-commerce shopping cart plug-in that allows retailers to quickly and easily accept online payments. We recently delivered an informative webinar with 451 Research titled Retail’s Digital Transformation and Genius Checkout. The webinar replay is available for any partner interested in developing an e-commerce strategy. In the webinar you will learn:
  • The 5 most important drivers of the retail digital transformation
  • How you can offer your customers a true Unified Commerce solution
  • Why it’s essential to add ecommerce to your offering and how to do it
  • How to provide new omni-channel insights to your merchants to grow their business
For more information or to get started on integrating to Genius Checkout, please contact your Cayan Business Development or Partner Development Manager.

3. Partner Portal

Cayan has delivered a brand new partner portal with a streamlined interface, significant usability improvements, and value-added features. The new portal is accessed through https://cayan.com/login and allows you to view merchant accounts and residuals, and submit leads to Cayan.

Cayan is in the process of contacting partners with new credentials and can answer any questions you might have. In the meantime, feel free to contact your Partner Development Manager for more information.

4. Card brands drop signature requirement

As of April 16, 2018, all Genius terminals processing chip cards (EMV) no longer prompt customers for their signature on credit card transactions.

This change came about because Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover changed their rules and no longer require a signature for in-store card transactions originating at US merchants. It also applies to additional card brands that process through the Discover network: China Union Pay, JCB, Diners, and Carte Blanche.

No action is required by retailers or POS providers, and the change applies to all transaction types including EMV, magstripe, manual key entry, and NFC/contactless transactions such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Additionally, merchants no longer have to supply the signature as part of a chargeback dispute.

Upcoming Brownouts to Prepare for TLS Deadline

As today’s hackers continue to find new and more sophisticated ways to steal customer data, the Payment Card Industry (PCI) needs to continue to find ways to stay one step ahead. That’s why the PCI Security Standards Council (SSC) has declared that the widely-used Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 encryption method is no longer secure enough to keep sensitive information safe. Therefore, the PCI Security Council has mandated that TLS 1.0 must be disabled by June 30, 2018.

What does this mean?

If your POS doesn’t support TLS 1.1 or 1.2 by July 1, 2018, you will no longer be able to process card transactions as of that day. If this happens, you’ll have to contact everyone involved in your payments, starting with your POS provider and payment processor, to find out which systems need to be updated. As a result, you’ll likely lose sales and revenue because you won’t be able to process cards during this time.

What is Cayan's response?

Cayan’s Genius terminals are prepared for this deadline, already supporting TLS 1.2, as do its Virtual Terminal, Portals, and Payment Gateway. During its early-morning maintenance window on July 1, 2018, Cayan will disable support for TLS 1.0 in all its products, as mandated by the PCI Security Council.

Since the deadline was announced in 2015, Cayan has been working with its POS partners and merchants to ensure that they are ready for the upcoming deadline. To help educate its merchants and draw attention to this deadline, Cayan will be implementing a series of short, scheduled brownouts in production.

These brownouts are brief scheduled periods where Cayan will be disabling TLS 1.0 in all its products. Merchants whose Point of Sale does not support TLS 1.1/1.2 will be unable to process credit card transactions for the duration of the brownout. Merchants whose Point of Sale does support TLS 1.1/1.2 will be unaffected by these brownouts. Merchants affected by the brownouts are strongly encouraged to contact their POS provider to update their solution. We’ve intentionally left three weeks’ time between brownouts to give merchants time to bring their systems into compliance.

Below are the scheduled brownout periods:

• Monday, April 2: 10-1015am EST
• Tuesday, April 24: 12-1215pm EST
• Tuesday, May 15: 12-1230pm EST
• Wednesday, June 6: 2--230pm EST
• Thursday, June 28: 4-430pm EST

Cayan reserves the right to alter the above brownout schedule as necessary.

Why does this matter now?

July 2018 may seem like a long way off, but prior history with large payment technology changes, such as the EMV chip card switchover and the SHA update, indicate merchants should plan for this far in advance. The key to avoiding disruptions on July 1, 2018 is being prepared and updating to TLS 1.1 or 1.2 as soon as possible.

How can I get started?

Get in touch with your POS provider as soon as possible. Find out what version of TLS they’re currently supporting and ask them what their plan to update looks like.

Don't wait

You can avoid brownouts and avoid the blackout coming on July 1st by acting now. Contact your POS provider or visit https://cayan.com/tls to discuss next steps today.

Quarterly Product Update - Winter 2018

1. Genius Checkout

Genius Checkout is available now for partner integration. The e-commerce payment plug-in easily integrates with any Genius retailer’s existing website or mobile app to enable online payments.

With proven fraud prevention tools powered by Kount, Genius Checkout passes all sensitive card data directly from the consumer’s browser to Cayan’s gateway, reducing risk and taking the e-commerce platform out of scope for PA-DSS. Kount’s fraud prevention features built-in real-time fraud scoring, machine learning, and pre-defined rules which are designed to catch and prevent the most common types of fraud in the card-not-present world.

Salesforce Commerce Cloud Integration

Cayan has updated and recertified its Salesforce Commerce Cloud payment cartridge plug-in with Genius Checkout. This allows Genius customers who use Salesforce Commerce Cloud to operate a secure e-commerce website, and link in-store and online channels as part of their Unified Commerce journey. With a single token, a merchant can track payment transactions across all channels.

In Q2, the Salesforce Commerce Cloud integration will include Kount, as well as Apple Pay mobile wallet integration.

Cayan is also planning a February webinar to discuss where Genius Checkout fits into our Unified Commerce suite of products. For more information, please contact your Cayan Business Development or Partner Development Manager.

2. Genius

Genius Mini

API documentation for the Genius Mini Android version is now available. For partners with a Windows-based POS, your current Genius integration should already work for Genius Mini. Since its release earlier in 2017, many of our mutual customers – both retail and restaurant - are looking forward to leaving the counter behind and are asking us about Genius Mini. But we can’t help them without you. Get started today to by contacting your Partner Development Manager.

Clutch Gift Card Integration

Cayan has completed Genius integration with Clutch, a leading gift card and stored value solution provider. Genius now has more than 10 certified gift card processors. Please contact your Cayan Business Development or Partner Development Manager if you would like to learn more about Clutch or any gift card processing provider integrated to Genius.

Quarterly Product Update - Fall 2017

For more information on any of these updates contact your Partner Development Manager or partner support.

1. Auto Enrollment

Cayan now offers a way to automate and speed up the acquiring merchant account sign-up process.

Cayan's Auto Enrollment lets our software development partners receive a unique URL from Cayan to share with their merchant prospects. The URL will bring prospects to the partner web page where they can start the application process. This includes all the questions captured on the Merchant Processing Agreement (MPA) and can be completed without having to speak with a sales representative. It automatically captures user data – even when they abandon applications - and no integration is required. Prospects are also able to order equipment and sign the Platform Agreement.

For more information, please contact your Cayan Business Development or Partner Development Manager.

2. Genius

Genius Mini

This past summer, Cayan began piloting Genius Mini, the semi-integrated mobile payment solution that will help our mutual customers accept payments anywhere inside or outside the store. Genius Mini is an all-in-one device that accepts EMV, NFC, magstripe, gift cards and more.

With the continued growth of mobile POS and payment acceptance, now is the time to solidify your strategy and communicate with your Genius VARs and merchants about Genius Mini. Many of our partners have already planned their Genius Mini roll-out, so don’t get left behind.

According to Didge Masser-Frye of FoundryLogic, "I have Genius Mini working with my app — swipes, dips and Apple Pay all work great! And it took me less than 2 hours to get it all working, which says a lot about your team’s care in implementing it faithfully to the Genius API. Even error handling cases like user cancelled, disconnected/powered off are handled cleanly. Nice job!"

And in-store installation is incredibly fast and easy. There’s no cabling to worry about, and one early merchant adopter reports that it took him less than two minutes to set up. He found it very easy to download the app, enter credentials and pair with Bluetooth.

Want to get started? Documentation for the iOS version of Genius Mini is now available, with an Android version available in the coming weeks. To learn more, please contact your Partner Development Manager.
Genius Smart P2PE
In September, Cayan achieved Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) 2.0 Certification from the PCI Security Standards Council for Genius Countertop. Dubbed Genius Smart P2PE, this certification delivers the highest level of security for merchants while also simplifying PCI-DSS compliance efforts and reducing costs.

Merchants will experience benefits, such as:
  • A simplified and efficient PCI-DSS compliance process that reduces SAQ controls from 12 to 4 sections and from 329 questions that prove their compliance to just 33
  • Encryption of data at Point of Interaction (POI) to reduce fraud risk
  • In fraudulent circumstances, the P2PE Solution Provider, not the merchant, is held accountable for data loss and fines
Because of the simplicity of the Genius API, no changes are required to the POS and no special certification is required. To learn more about P2PE, the PCI Standards Council has posted a helpful Program Guide, or you can contact your Partner Development Manager who will provide more information on Genius Smart P2PE.
Genius version
Genius version is now available, delivering significant device performance enhancements. All Genius devices are being updated throughout October through a phased roll-out. Enhancements include:
  • Fix for occasional reboot loops and loss of connection
  • Selecting buttons on Payment Selection screen no longer transitions to additional screen
  • Gift CVV characters have been increased
  • Swipe Anytime no longer supports contactless due to floor limits required by card brands
  • Download, network reconnection and stability improvements
Merchants are being notified the week before their devices are updated. As always, these will take place after business hours for the merchant and will not affect their ability to process transactions. Along with the new Genius version, all devices will receive a new VeriFone® operating system (OS) to fix a security vulnerability and deliver device improvements.
If you have any questions, please contact Partner Support. Full release notes have been emailed and are also available through you Partner Development Manager.

3. E-Commerce

Cayan is inviting Genius partners to integrate to Genius Checkout, Cayan’s e-Commerce shopping cart plug-in which can be used for online, mobile web and mobile app deployment.

Genius Checkout makes it easy for shopping cart developers to quickly and securely accept online payments, maintaining their site's look and feel while providing consolidated reporting across channels.

A major component of Genius Checkout is an integration with Kount, delivering built-in fraud prevention through pre-defined rules which are designed to catch the most common types of fraud. Retailers will know which transactions are potentially safe, which ones require further review, and which ones should be considered for rejection. A future phase of this integration leverages insights through artificial intelligence, big data and marketing behavioral analytics to help drive additional retail merchandise sales and reduce chargebacks.

For more information or to integrate to Genius Checkout, contact your Partner Development Manager.

EMV Gateway

New EMV certifications - TSYS
Cayan has added EMV certification with TSYS, enabling Genius customers to choose TSYS processing and allowing TSYS customers to access the Genius Platform.

This latest certification supports Cayan’s processor-agnostic approach which includes EMV certification with other industry-leading processors such as WorldPay, Chase and Elavon. For more information go to the Cayan newsroom.

Quarterly Product Update - Summer 2017

1. Are you ready for the end of TLS 1.0?

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) declared the encryption protocol called TLS 1.0 to be unacceptably weak and unsafe. Accordingly, the PCI Security Standards Council has mandated that TLS 1.0 must be disabled by June 30, 2018, and all card transactions after that date will not be processed through that protocol.

This means all merchant and POS systems need to migrate to TLS 1.1 or 1.2 by June 30, 2018. We believe this industry-wide effort and impact will be on-par with EMV or SHA-1, so now is the time to be proactive and start preparing for this transition. We encourage you to:
  • Assess the readiness of your POS systems and versions to support TLS 1.1 or higher
  • Plan updates as needed for POS operating system(s), hardware, web browsers and TLS settings on Windows
  • Prioritize any needed development work
  • Identify the impact on your current customers and build an upgrade strategy
  • Identify prospective customers you may be able to attract based on your readiness
Cayan has taken a highly proactive approach to ensure we maintain the highest levels of security and compliance. We encourage you to use Cayan’s sandbox environment. You should also prepare your service and support employees to take advantage of Cayan’s field tests in advance of the cutover date. Of course we will continue to keep you informed as we get closer to the cut-off date. Feel free to view our recent on demand webinar to get deeper insight.

2. Genius

Genius Mini
Cayan recently presented a sneak peak of Genius Mini, a mobile payment solution that will help our mutual customers accept payments anywhere. Genius Mini connects to a tablet or smartphone and can process any payment type from any location through a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. That means restaurants can take payments at the table or anywhere outside, specialty retailers can get away from the counter and go wherever the customer goes, and service or repair professionals can take payments at customers’ homes or on job sites.
We are currently working with partners and merchants to pilot Genius Mini. If you would like to participate or learn more to prepare for the market launch, please contact your Partner Development Manager.
Genius Handheld Accessories
As of June, all new Genius Handheld orders will include cases as part of their shipment. We will also be supplying cases to retailers who received devices between February and May. Stands for the counter are also available for retailers interested in having the device at a fixed location. The stands serve as a charging station and are sold separately. Cayan also offers multi-device charging stations to charge up to three devices at a time. Documentation is available, contact your Partner Development Manager to learn more.
Samsung Pay
According to 451 Research, merchants that place mobile wallet logos at or around their POS terminals have seen consumer usage increase by as much as 200%-300%. On May 5, Genius devices running version with active Android Pay or Apple Pay buttons received a remote update adding a Samsung Pay button to the display. In addition to Samsung Pay stickers that ship with every Genius device, this update is designed to drive greater consumer awareness of this payment option.
Genius release
Cayan Genius® version is available for merchants to download and will be installed on new devices. Enhancements include:
  • Ability to define a tip eligible amount
  • NFC debit transactions will prompt for PIN
  • EMV transactions won’t prompt for signature under certain dollar amount, if device is configured for it
  • Web-based POS systems using the recent Chrome update can access HTTPS certificate
Full release notes were emailed in May and are also available through you Partner Development Manager. Existing merchants on older versions can contact Customer Support to receive the update.

3. EMV Gateway

New EMV certifications - WorldPay
Cayan has added EMV certification with WorldPay, enabling Genius Platform customers to choose WorldPay processing, and now WorldPay’s customers can access the power of the Genius Platform. This latest certification supports Cayan’s processor-agnostic approach and brings our EMV certification count to a total of six, including other industry-leading processors such as Chase and Elavon. A full announcement will be available at https://cayan.com/newsroom.

4. Additional News

New System Status URL
Cayan currently delivers visibility into processor uptime through an industry leading processor status web page, which includes the ability to receive updates via email, SMS text and more. In June we migrated to a new status page provider, allowing us to provide more detailed notifications and metrics, and offering additional subscription options such as RSS feeds and Slack notifications.

The url didn’t change and no action was needed for existing subscribers, however the status page and notifications have been re-formatted. To utilize this valuable tool we encourage you to bookmark it or you can always access it from the top section of the Cayan Help Center.

Quarterly Product Update - Spring 2017

Cayan is pleased to introduce new quarterly product updates. This will be a regular source for communicating new product launches and feature releases, and will provide a view into how individual product enhancements fit into our solution set. We will post updates every quarter, so be sure to check in and learn about the latest and greatest.

1. Unified Commerce Features

Card Account Updater
Cayan recently announced the availability of new Card Account Updater functionality. Available as part of the Unified Commerce Solution™ Suite, partners integrated to the Cayan Card Vault can now support automated card updates.

Expired cards are a common headache. If customers don’t inform the business of a newly issued card, it leads to interrupted service and, in many cases, lost sales.

For example, some merchants offer services that are billed on a recurring basis, such as web hosting, gym memberships, monthly donation plans, and more. And e-commerce customers may allow consumers to store their credit card information on a merchant’s website to speed up checkout.

Cayan’s Card Account Updater delivers a friction-free shopping experience by automatically updating the consumer’s Visa or MasterCard account-on-file information. Now, if the customer's card number or expiration date changes, our solution automatically retrieves the new information for merchants in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner.

This feature is available immediately for all retailers of partners integrated to the Cayan Card Vault.
To get started or find out more information, please contact your Partner Development Manager or VAR Manager.

2. Genius

Genius Handheld
In February, Cayan launched Genius Handheld, allowing store associates to accept payments anywhere in the store. When linked to a mobile POS tablet or pre-loaded with a POS application, associates can efficiently and securely accept payment options away from the countertop, minimizing the wait to pay. Retailers and restaurants can process EMV or any preferred payment type wherever the customer is, whenever they are ready. And it’s the perfect companion to Genius Countertop.

Genius Handheld leverages the Genius API so there is no additional work. POS partners new to Genius can implement either Genius Handheld or Genius Countertop first - once you certify to one solution you’re ready to go.

To learn more go to https://cayan.com/genius/handheld
Tip Eligible Amount
Genius Countertop now has the ability to specify a tip-eligible amount prior to payment, as required in some payment situations. For example if a consumer spends $125 for a haircut at $80 plus $45 of hair products, the only want to tip on the $80 haircut. Other scenarios could include:
  • Restaurants: Tipping is typically based on total amount, but some regions don’t allow tipping on alcohol, and most restaurants exclude gift card purchases from tipping.
  • Service Merchants: Tipping for salons, spas, health clubs, yoga studios, etc. is purely based on service amount and not on items purchased such as gift cards, hair products, oils etc.
  • Medical Service Merchants: Tipping for doctors, physician assistants, nurses and other medical professionals is not allowed by law, and certain services are restricted from gratuity. Medical spas, plastic surgeons, and other medical and semi-medical services have a mix of tippable and non-tippable services and staff.
This feature is available on Genius or higher integrated with a POS that supports Tip Eligible Amount. It is not available for Genius Handheld at this time.

To add this feature please see our Genius API documentation at https://cayan.com/developers, and if you have any questions please contact our integrations team at developer@cayan.com.
FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts)
Flexible Spending, Health Reimbursement and Health Savings Accounts have become a popular way for consumers to manage their healthcare expenses. In fact FSA credit acceptance is now a business requirement for pharmacies. Now pharmacies can use Genius to process FSA card transactions as well as take advantage of all traditional Genius benefits such as keeping card data off the POS, remote updates, and Chip IQ for fast EMV processing. Contact your partner development manager for more information.
Gift Card Enhancements
You asked and we listened! Genius has added gift card functionality that delivers more value and streamlines the consumer experience. Consumers can now be prompted by the Genius display screens to perform the following:
  • Swipe gift card to activate card, add value and perform balance inquiry
  • Key card number to redeem, add value and perform balance inquiry
To provide this functionality to merchants, Genius partners must make minor code changes and certify. Please refer to the latest Genius API documentation links below and note that the ADDVALUE API call is used for both activating a new gift card and adding value to an existing gift card, i.e. there is no separate API call for card activation. The certification script can be found here. Once certified, your POS will be able to prompt consumers through the Genius screens.  For more information, please contact your Partner Development Manager or visit the Cayan Help Center.
EBT Cash
Genius Countertop is now able to process EBT Cash Benefits.
EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) is a system allowing state welfare departments to load and redeem benefits to applicable citizens via a magnetic stripe card, similar to credit cards.

Merchants wanting to enable this feature must be processing with either TSYS or Chase Paymentech and must have PIN Debit enabled on their account. EBT Cash will eventually be part of all other future platform/processor certifications.

To add this feature please see our Genius API documentation, and if you have any questions please contact our integrations team at developer@cayan.com.
Customer Input
Genius’ new Customer Input feature allows retailers to collect numeric information from their customers on the Genius device. This is particularly useful for retailers who want to enable credit applications at the point of sale. The customizable prompt allows the customer to enter numeric values such as a phone number, birth date, driver’s license, etc.

Communication between Genius and the POS must be done via https channel due to the possibly sensitive nature of the information. The POS is responsible for routing and storing the information, and Genius does not collect or store this data.

This feature is available on Genius or higher. Coding to the Get Customer Input API call is required, API documentation is here on cayan.com.

No certification or additional configuration is needed, however we ask that you notify developer@cayan.com after completing implementation.

3. Additional News

New EMV certifications
Cayan continues to offer Genius merchants the latest in payment processing capabilities by achieving two EMV certifications this quarter.

In January we announced EMV certification with payments processor Elavon, a leading global payments provider and subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp. Read more at https://cayan.com/company/newsroom/news-articles/cayan-achieves-elavon-emv-certification

And on March 27 we announced EMV certification with Chase (Paymentech) Merchant Services, the global payment processing and merchant acquiring business of JPMorgan Chase & Co. For more information go to https://cayan.com/company/newsroom/news-articles/cayan-achieves-chase-emv-certification

The addition of both certifications offers Cayan customers greater flexibility in determining which EMV processing solution works best for their business, expanding the options available to our rapidly growing Genius customer base and allowing Elavon and Chase customers to use Genius.
